About Lough Hyne

Lough Hyne is Europe's only sea lough — a fully marine, tidal lake near Skibbereen in County Cork that has been a protected nature reserve since 1981. The enclosed basin warms several degrees above typical Irish sea temperatures, creating conditions that support rare Mediterranean and warm-Atlantic species not found elsewhere in Ireland. At 3–20m it's genuinely beginner-friendly, but every square metre rewards slow inspection: nudibranch species count here rivals tropical reefs, and glassfish tornado the entrance channel at the tidal rapids.
