Diving in Ulster
Ulster's diving spans two jurisdictions — Donegal in the Republic and the coastline around Strangford Lough and Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland. Donegal's north and west coasts offer serious ocean diving: Malin Head, Arranmore Island and Fanad Head face the open Atlantic with strong tidal streams and excellent visibility when calm. Strangford Lough is one of the fastest tidal flows in Europe — dive at precisely the right stage of the tide or don't dive at all — but the reward is extraordinary biodiversity. Rathlin Island off the Antrim coast has dramatic vertical walls with sponge gardens and regular seal encounters.
